Borges: a whale of an error
[Will.Whim] Your English version of Borges’ celebrated essay http://www.entish.org/essays/Wilkins.html contains a rather spectacular mistranslation based presumably on a typo in the original Spanish.

Linux Wins the Grand Challenge
[ www.hacklog.com] A LinuxDevices article notes that most of the teams that qualified in the Grand Challenge were running Linux-based systems including the two CMU robots. The Stanford Stanley robot was rumoured to be running Linux but the team has not released enough technical details about their robot to confirm the rumour.

Ecology and Emotion
[After Gutenberg] German model posed on Chinese EV A Toyota news release about an active steering mechanism that “seamlessly controls vehicle movement from before the point at which the vehicle becomes unstable” illustrates some of the features to be emphasized by concept vehicles at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show. Note: The press release informs, “This year, the Toyota exhibit retains the same theme as last year””Ecology & Emotion””featuring its initiatives for creating vehicles that pursue both environmental consideration and the essential emotional appeal of a car”¦” We may be at a particular juncture for personal transportation, to which I have alluded previously.

Machine evolution and consciousness (circa 1872)
[Will.Whim] he has already succeeded in effecting much that at one time appeared impossible, and there seem no limits to the results of accumulated improvements if they are allowed to descend with modification from generation to generation. It must always be remembered that man’s body is what it is through having been moulded into its present shape by the chances and changes of many millions of years, but that his organisation never advanced with anything like the rapidity with which that of the machines is advancing.

Robot Race Has a Winner This Year!
[Phantasmablogia - Music and Video Blog by Alan Fraser] Last year, none of the robots even finished the race. Officials aren't positive Stanley won as each of the robots started out at staggered intervals so the clocks have to be checked to positively declare a winner.

Prefered by Bots Everywhere
[After Gutenberg] The media has latched on to the fact that a Volkswagen Touareg beat out two Hummers, a Ford Escape Hybrid and a monster truck at the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. While it was the artificial intelligence developed by the Stanford team that excelled, it is ironic that the winner is a favorite vehicle among the Birkenstock-clad, treehugging, granola-eating, soccer mom set.

Gracious Professionalism, A FIRST Credo
[the mad cow] Obviously it would not make sense to endorse “asinine professionalism” or “gracious incompetence.” It is, however, completely consistent with the FIRST spirit to encourage doing high quality well informed work in a manner that leaves everyone feeling valued. Gracious professionalism seems to be a good descriptor for part of the ethos of FIRST.
