[Intro to Texts and Technology] Rarely does the scripting provide what I perceive to be morally ambiguous choices that dont have clear ramifications for a character or user. While there are exceptions, AI has yet to smoothly replicate the intricacy of choices and subtle behavior of real humans. Most games play out like e-literature in that dialogue choices drive the storyline down branching paths, rather than feeling like a “real” virtual world. This probably explains the popularity of MMORGs - less scripting and more humanity.

[Offworld] Ragdoll Metaphysics: Chet Faliszek on Valve Culture, why AI ...: I decided it was time to sit down with him and see what was making the writer from Old Man Murray tick in 2009, with his thoughts on Valve company culture, the mixed messages and missed opportunities that spawned the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott, how the world of Left 4 Dead may or may not tie in to the world of Half-Life, and playing with AI versus playing with another real human being.

[Straight Dope Message Board - Cafe Society] Spielberg Explains Ending of A.I. Artificial Intelligence ...: To be honest, the ending as filmed actually chokes me up, mostly because I'm a sucker for characters that give in to their flaws in the end (it's Shakespearean tragedy with less death and more anthropomorphic robots!)It also has one of the most bittersweet scores I've heard, one that only amplifies the feeling that David may finally be happy...
[Rock, Paper, Shotgun] The Big Quest(ion) | Rock, Paper, Shotgun: With Mass Effect 2 promising darker themes, more brutal stories and fewer fluffy asides, Dragon Age implying a hardened world of grisly fighting, and Alpha Protocol replacing good/bad choices with murky/murkier, this notion appears to be getting increasingly mature. What will be interesting to see, in all forthcoming RPGs, is whether there can be a sense of scale to match.
[On the Human] Distributing/Disturbing the Chinese Room « On the Human: locked in the room, becomes in EXTENDED a cascading series of contexts. The rule book, for example, knows which symbols match with which, the basket knows which symbols are incoming and outgoing, and so forth. The EXTENDED model implies that context is not self-identical or solely human-centered but rather a chain of partially overlapping, partially discrete contexts interacting with each other as different cognizers within the system coordinate their activities. In particular, meaning is tied in with the contexts in which information flows are processed. As Edward Fredkin succinctly observes, “The meaning of information is given by the processes that interpret it.” For a cell, these processes would include, for example, the flow of nutrients in and out of the cell walls, its metabolic activities, its expulsion of waste, and other such processes. To acknowledge the non-conscious nature of such activities, the EXTENDED model typically replaces consciousness with the broader term “cognition.” As I am using the term here, cognition requires as a minimum an information flow, embodied processes that interpret the flow, and contexts that support and extend the interpretive activities. In the Chinese Room, the basket counts as a cognizer, the rule book as another. Even the door slot through which the strings are passed can be considered a cognizer, for it receives information in the form of incoming characters, interprets these characters through processes that allow them to pass from outside to inside and from inside to outside, and constructs a context through its shape and position.
[Cyberpunk Review] Cyberpunk Review » Artificial Intelligence: AI: and gave it to Spielberg because he knew his approach would work better, given the material. It wasn't like Spielberg was handed a shooting script and tore it to bits and re-did it”¦ he shot the script Kubrick gave him.
[The Blog Formerly Known As Dean's World] Project Natal: There will be a raging debate in sports about whether athletes with artificial enhancement should be ALLOWED to perform. There will be many MORE procedures done purely by choice, those will include procedures which alter skin, hair, sexual characteristics, fingernails (don’t be surprised if your granddaughter’s boyfriend has retractable claws), etc.
[Charlie's Diary] Charlie's Diary: Why I hate Star Trek: Although Ron Moore can now be pointed to as someone from the "inside" that now heavily criticizes Star Trek, he has been doing so since the end of Deep Space Nine, and I believe he must have some personal gripe with his treatment as in the speech you cited his description of how a Next Generation script would look is obviously grossly exaggerated. It would be impossible for any writers of a television show to be as divorced from the material as he makes it out to be, and his intent is clearly just to disparage the show in contrast with the direction he took Battlestar Galactica.
