The bartender and the whole town was pleased with this answer, and soon the "Man Who Orders Three Beers" became a local celebrity and source of pride to the village, even to the extent that out-of-towners would come to watch him drink.
[Fredbals.blogspot.com] Fred Bals' Blog aka fhb: 2004-09-19: I'm not the first to notice that "Sky Captain" draws heavily from the two Fleischer Superman cartoons, "The Mechanical Monsters" and "The Bulleteers." The robot invasion of an art deco New York has moments where there are almost screen-by-screen duplications of both cartoons, even down to the use of the same camera angle as a barricaded police force unleashes a tommy-gun barrage against the robots.
[Fredbals.blogspot.com] Fred Bals' Blog aka fhb: September 2004: Rather than the postscript Boylan's buddy, Richard Russo (yep, the RR) closes the book with, I would have preferred something from his (her? ah, the semantics of transgender) long-suffering wife, "Grace", whose story Boylan -- perhaps from necessity -- short changes and whose feelings are reduced to a series of venting monologues by book's end. Boylan hints, in a section written after he's had the ah, "surgery", that he suspects he'll eventually explore sex with a man, which must give Grace some pause. In fact, I suspected that Boylan was going to end up in bed with Russo (or conversely, midway through Russo's postscript, that he was going to end up in bed with Grace), but reality is seldom as tidy as fiction, and, if either has happened, the parties remain mute, at least in this book.

I, for one, have detested the anti-democratic, pro-Singapore fundraising robot since 1987, when he let his deciding vote on an offshore platform project in Santa Barbara be bought off after a looooong wooing campaign by Chevron, UCSB, and the California Democratic Party. In the current gubernatorial campaign, Davis has distinguished himself by claiming that Republican favorite Richard Riordan, the ex-L.A. mayor, is insufficiently bloodthirsty when it comes to the Death Penalty.
