The essence of the paper is this : Using the page counts returned by the Google search engine to define a distribution over words and word pairs and using it to automatically extract meaning from the world wide web.

It covers both the ins and outs of being a working scientist in the field (dealing with reviews, funding for ML, why we bother to write papers, and the like), and the discussion of actual research (cross-validation, tight bounds, online learning, etc.).
