[Ismael Chang Ghalimi] On Intelligence: Among the great books I read last year, On Intelligence from Jeff Hawkins and Sandra Blakeslee was one of the best. Jeff Hawkins was the founder of Palm Computing and Handspring, but later started the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience to work on his lifelong passion for the mysteries of the brain, and among them how the neocortex

The soft takeoff for the singularity would be one that takes years to occur, under 20 years, perhaps as few as two or so, but it would be a process that a few people would be able to think about and respond to as it occurs. The "hard takeoff" is one that occurs catastrophically and unexpectedly, in a matter of days, and catches us be surprise.
